Wishing You a Happy New Year — All Year Long

What’s the expiration date on New?

The minute a new car leaves the lot, it becomes a used car. Christmas toys, not yet a week old, have already lost some of their holiday shine. Can we still say “Happy New Year” on January 10? February 1?

Just how long does it take for New to become Same Old-Same Old?

Not long, I fear. For as much hope and promise and anticipation we place on the New, discouragement is quick to set in, leaving us looking for the Next New Thing. Or we wait for time’s built-in reset button to feel hopeful again – a new year, new month, new week, new day.

But scripture tells us over and over that God is in the ReNewing Business.

ReNew. New now. And again now. And now.

New — over and over. Moment by moment.

“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” (Romans 12:2)

“Those who wait upon the Lord will renew their strength.” (Isaiah 40:31)

“Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.” (2 Corinthians 4:16)

So you know when you can be New? Right now! Which means each MOMENT is a new year, a new you, a new taste of grace. Let’s drink it up in 2012!

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” (Isaiah 43:18-19)
