For Will & Kate & Other New Parents
A co-worker and I watched the live feed with much of the rest of the world as the Royal Baby made his debut on the hospital steps earlier this week. So much interest in such a little boy.
And while our views may vary on the appropriateness of such a public view during a private time … or on the reasonableness of the fervor for the Royal Family, I couldn’t help but be thrilled by the outpouring of support for a new life.
If I had the means, I would stage a royal display for every baby as he or she heads home. I would cheer as new parents smile with that mix of “this is the coolest thing I’ve ever done” and “what the heck do we do now?” And I would tell, every single already-sleep-deprived one of them, “You got this!”
There will be great days. And hard days. And most days are a mix of both great and hard moments.
I would tell them that you are absolutely the exact parent God picked for your baby. Not that you will do things perfectly. Sometimes not even well. But there was no other match on the planet God wanted for this parent-child pairing. And He knows what He’s doing.
That it’s Ok to ask for help when you need it. And leave the dishes in the sink to take a nap.
That’s it’s Ok to ignore the well-intentioned advice from others when it just doesn’t feel like the right choice for your family.
That God made all kinds of families, and He loves yours like crazy.
That just by being born, your baby has changed us all. Because the world is connected like that, and we all make a difference.
Your baby may never be king. But he’s still worth a royal celebration.
You got this, new parent. You got this.
